My List is Surely Shorter Than Your List

21 October 2009

The Rodrigo y Gabriela concert was fabulous. It’s amazing what a sound system and flashing lights will do to music — especially a guitar duo. When you listen to their recorded music, you can imagine it being played in a small room. But on stage! It’s a whole nother beast.

Driving up to Minneapolis, I began to list all the concerts I have been to in my life. The list felt pitifully short (I didn’t go see a concert until I was in college). Over a delicious tapas dinner (and entire bottle of wine) before the show, the Consort helped me remember a few other concerts we had seen. I am posting it here because this blog has become my backup memory — and these are not in strict chronological order, mind you.

  • Sting (at some huge sportsplex in the DC area)
  • They Might Be Giants (at the Bayou [ah, the Bayou!] in DC)
  • The Fixx (again, at the Bayou)
  • WHFS-tival, with King Missile and lots of other early 1990s bands (somewhere in Maryland, outside of DC)
  • They Might Be Giants (at a small club in San Francisco)(I *know*! Twice — and we like them, but not THAT much; although they do put on a good show)
  • The Indigo Girls (at some outdoor amphitheater in Berkeley)
  • The Spin Doctors (with Soul Asylum [*I* say, the Consort says it wasn’t Soul Asylum, but I’m pretty sure; we need to check this with the friends we went to the concert with]; at the Bay Area Six Flags)
  • Tori Amos (at an intimate theater space in San Francisco)
  • Yonder Mountain String Band (with Cornmeal; at Des Moines’ Simon Estes Amphitheater)
  • Suzanne Vega (in a small theater in New Hampshire)
  • Natalie MacMaster (in a small theater in Vermont)
  • Rodrigo y Gabriela (in Minneapolis)

I think that’s it. My sister invited us to go see Nine Inch Nails in California, but Impera was still a baby and I was just too tired to even consider it (which was a killer because *I* was the one to introduce my sisters to NIN). And to think there’s a meme going around on Facebook of “My Top 50 Favorite Concerts”. Golly!

That *is* short. But impressive. And, um, “golly?” 😉

Oh! I just remembered Suzanne Vega and Natalie MacMaster. I have to add that in. And Ellie: I am a foul-mouthed person. Sometimes, I try extra hard to be a better example to my children. hence, “golly”. 😉

You like NIN?! Did I know that? I can’t remember. Did you hear Trent just got married???

errm. sorry. please feel free to return to your usual programming 🙂

(I’ve seen Tori 3 times. She was really good!)

I came up with ~25…no where near 50.

I saw TMBG in Albuquerque on their Apollo 18 tour. Fun.

Oh, you know who we forgot: King Missile and all the rest at Wolf Trap.

wow– i starting to think of mine, and I am already past 30 after just 5 min (thank college for bringing in lots of acts, and being married to a concert loving FOOL)… maybe I should make a whole list now lol

I saw the Indigo Girls as well and loved them.

I haven’t seen many, but the best concert I’ve ever seen was k.d. lang.

How was Sting? (I’m a little green over here, although my preference would be to see The Police.)

Beth: Yes, I do like NIN, but his first album is by far the best. The sounds are more layered, more complex. Also, I don’t really like his personality. He and Marilyn Manson together act like 13-year-old girls. Pfft.

Wil: 25 is a good number!

IC: I added in the WHFS-tival. But I’m pretty sure it wasn’t at Wolf Trap…

    cowgirl: Oh. Mah. Lord!

Katie: Yeah, although I don’t like how they’ve been taken over by the lesbian community — their music is for everyone, darnit! Sting was pretty amazing: lots of flashing lights, crazy props, etc. It was the tour for Nothing Like the Sun, which was close to my heart at the time. I agree, the Police, back in their heyday, would have been super!

You forgot a 3rd TMBG concert, at that open air amphitheater at Stanford. I ran into you there! (I think Dave almost ran me over with his bike while I was waiting in line…) You were pregnant with Impera at the time.

Oh, yeah, don’t know how I missed that. And you’re right about it not being at Wolf Trap–it was at Lake Fairfax Park. And apparently the Violent Femmes played. I totally don’t remember that! Oh, and btw, we totally had the worst year of the festival EVER. Other years, they’ve had Counting Crows, the Prodigy, Chili Peppers, Crystal Method, B52s, PJ Harvey, Thievery Corporation, Barenaked Ladies, Rage Against the Machine, Coldplay, and a million other people I’d rather see than King Missile and the other peeps who I don’t remember! 😡
