Random bullets for a Tuesday morning

11 May 2010
  • I’ve just switched back (again; I do this every 4 months or so) to washing my hair with baking soda and conditioning with an apple cider vinegar rinse. The scalp massage feels so good!
  • Sometimes I think it be cool to live in a small cabin on a mountain. The road wouldn’t be passable in the winter, so once a week I could trek down to town on snowshoes for supplies and a bit of social interaction. I’d have to have a large pantry to store enough heavy things like canned tomatoes, dried beans, and flour to make it thru the winter (wouldn’t want to hike with that stuff in my backpack!). Probably wouldn’t have Internet — unless we (I’m assuming the Consort would join me, at least part of the time) could rig a bicycle to a generator to produce enough electricity for it. That would be a great way to stay in shape during the deepest part of winter, and it would be a nice way to pay forward the sedentary time I’d be spending online.
  • Last week I wore my new purple knitted socks. I saw both of them when I put them in the (front loading) washing machine, but only could find one to put on the drying rack at the end of the cycle. It didn’t slip thru to the dryer, because I didn’t find it in that pile of stuff, either. How the heck can someone lose a sock like that? And how disappointing when it’s a sock I knit myself.
  • It sure would have come in handy today — we’re in the middle of a May cold front, and I actually turned the heat on for a few hours last night. Since I’m wearing my purple long-sleeved t-shirt today (wish I hadn’t packed the turtlenecks away already), the new socks would have matched and made me smile. Oh well.

somehow, in the past couple of weeks, i lost a queen sized sheet. it would be sadder if it were a handknit sock, but it’s a lot bigger than a sock. how’d that happen?

Ooh – coincidentally, I have been exploring the wonders of the post-shampoo world. What’s your recipe?

Hope that sock turns up; irritating enough if store-bought, but homemade? Complete bummer.

I have *so* much to say to this.
*Baking soda shampoo and apple cider vinegar conditioner?? Really??? Are you sure that’s haircare and not a recipe for cupcakes or something?
*You *have * to have online access. Rig up the bike wheel.
*I refuse to believe your purple sock is gone. It must have been stolen by a cold poltergeist.
*Who’s smiling because she’s wearing purple.

Hi EW — My “recipe” is basically: make a paste from 1 tablespoon baking soda and water, massage into scalp (not ends), let sit 1 minute or so (while you wash the rest of you), rinse out, sprinkle a bit of apple cider vinegar (I have some in a salt shaker) onto your ends (not scalp), let sit 1 minute or so (while you wash your face), rinse. Done!

Ellie — nah, it’s not even a salad dressing recipe (and you are absolutely right, it must be a cold poltergeist!)

I use apple cider vinegar to catch fruit flies… I’m so curious about your recipe mostly because I don’t know if I could handle the smell — and worry that I was attracting flies! 🙂

You can rinse it out as quickly as you like. In fact, before I found the salt shaker, I would put a bit in the bottom of a plastic cup, add water to dilute it, then pour that over my ends. (Of course, my hair right now is chin length, so I don’t have inches and inches of hair wafting under my nose!). I just cannot stand the SWEETNESS of most commercial hair products — I don’t want to smell like a watermelon Jolly Rancher!
