Welcomes All Around

23 March 2009

Last week Trixie and I went for several walks in the wild spaces of Des Moines, looking for Spring. What we found was mostly brown and muddy.

The only green is moss, yet

But then, on Saturday, right on schedule, Spring arrived! Welcome, Spring!

OK. Spring is here!

Sure, it’s still mostly brown, but there are glimpses of color. Lovely, soft spring colors. Wait! Perhaps we should look closer…

Spring colors

Hmmm. What will that be? You will just have to wait and see.

On Sunday, our family acquired two more little girls. They are only one and a half days old, so they need lots of special care and attention. Trixie is only too happy to oblige.

Red Star chicks!

Mmmm, fresh eggs? Have you changed your one-per-species rule on animals then? 🙂

Cate: Ahhh, see, it’s mostly the indoor charismatic megafauna that are subject to the limit. A dog thinks she’s part of your pack. A cat thinks all the humans are his petting slaves. A rabbit likes his own territory. But chickens are social creatures, and can you just imagine how sad and lonely just one chicken would be outside in the coop in the middle of winter? Only one of them is Trixie’s — Ahuva. The other one (currently being called “Killer”) is “owned” by the Consort and I. But as an adult, I reserve the right to have unjustified exemptions to my own fatwas.

Oh, all that brown! That’s why I love England; it’s green year round.

The crocuses are a nice touch.
