Is Addiction Still Bad If It Makes You Do Good?

24 February 2009

It seems that the “exercise high” that the physically obsessed talk about is real. I’m in my fourth week of 4-5x per week sessions, and yesterday, when I had a day packed with project work to complete, I needed — needed — to make time for a 30-minute workout. I originally thought I’d just skip the day, but I got more and more jittery as the morning progressed. So, once I was sure I’d have enough time to get everything couriered off in time, I stopped and did my workout.

If you know me, you realize how out-of-character that last sentence sounds.

And then there’s the book situation. After 6 weeks of being conscious of the quality of the books I read, I have lost my patience with literary meringue. And when I finish a book, I want another good read ready to go — give me some wordly protein! I’ve been flittering for the past 36 hours (yes, I count it in hours), but just this afternoon got word that one of the books I requested is in. Woo-hoo!

I figure I’ll just continue with these two addictions until someone tells me that they are bad for me.

But, wait. What’s the book that’s in? Do tell.

Well, the book that came in is Saviano’s expose of the Camorra mafia in Naples, Gomorrah. So far I think he would have done well with an editor to cut out some of his repetitive similes, but I’ll give it a little longer.

The exercise I’m doing with Fitness Coach — software for the Wii. I think I ought to introduce you all to Maia, my virtual instructor, soon!
